rag rug making
(dream your rug and hook your dream!)
diane cox
After many years teaching infants Diane took early retirement and became a hooker (of rugs!) and has been hooking now for 15 years. Making floor, wall and bed coverings from recycled cloth is an ancient craft, originally brought to the British Isles by the Vikings. Although it was a craft born of necessity, it is also a very creative art form and a wonderful way to express yourself and in todays economic climate it's a fantastic way to re-use your unwanted clothes and produce something totally unique for your home!

What you will do on the course
Choose to make a rug, wall hanging, tea cosy or cushion cover. The course will enable students to create their own designs, with a view to putting part of themselves into their rugs, making them personal and meaningful. The techniques of both 'hooking' and 'prodding' will be demonstrated. Diane will offer plenty of advice on the different materials and techniques to make a beautiful piece of work.
Who should attend
The courses are suitable for beginners or experienced rug makers.
What you should bring with you
- Hooks and prodders, although these can be purchased from Diane on the course (hooks £8 and prodders £4).
- One metre of hessian (available from most fabric shops (approx £2).
- A sharp pair of fabric scissors
- Lots of fabric (washed) in colours you like (the colour is the most important thing about your fabric). Cottons are good such as T shirts, fleecy fabric, fine knit jumpers, muslin, acrylics, lightweight wools etc (but not heavy upholstery cotton).
