trompe l'oeil
with samantha dexter

Samantha has been painting murals professionaly for nearly 20 years. Originally she trained as a fine artist (MA Manchester) and after leaving college began to specialise in mural painting. These have included small scale trompe l'oeil and large murals, for example on ceilings and indoor pools. Samantha's impressive client list includes Mark Wilkinson Furniture, Hilton Hotels, J D Wetherspoon, Hodson Developments and Witton Hall. She has also painted for numerous private clients, including reproducing old masters and portraiture. Samantha moved to Cornwall from Nottingham a year ago and now runs Veryan Galleries with her husband Stephen. She continues to paint murals and has recently completed a number of local commissions.

What you will do on the course

The two days will include an introduction to trompe l'oeil and a demonstration of various techniques needed to create an illusion of three dimensions on a flat surface. For example how to paint stonework or cloth; understanding basic perspective; how to mix shadow colours and chosing subjects for small scale murals.

What will be provided

Each student will be provided with a primed panel on which they can create their own trompe l'oeil to take home. There will be a choice of two designs - a still life in an alcove or a view through a window - which you can copy, or use as a starting point, depending on your confidence. Samantha will also be demonstrating popular trompe l'oeil subjects for example how to paint a playing card on a shelf or a note pinned to a wall.
